OAU's 2023/2024 Certificates Are Finally Ready for Collection: What Graduates Need to Know
After
months… no, years of waiting, there is good news for the 23/24 graduates of
Obafemi Awolowo University (yes, those who convocated December 2024); the
University's 23/24 set certificates are now ready for collection, bringing
relief to many graduates who have been relying on their Statements of Result
while waiting for the official certificate.
If
you do not know why this certificates readiness took this long—longer than the one
year to one and a half years it usually used to take, read this write-up where
I explained that the university was introducing a new and more advanced model
of their certificate, and they wanted to start with the 24/25 set (those who
convocated in December 2025), but they later decided to add the 23/24 set; but
then, they encountered some technical problems in the production of the new
certificates (the new model. Rumours were the management was going to take a
pause on the new model and continue with the old model they have been using for
decades.
Now
that it’s only the 23/24 set certificates ready for collection, we have not confirmed
whether they went ahead with the new model they were trying to port to or they
just stuck to the old ones we heard they were going to revert to. Either ways,
we can confirm 23/24 graduates can now collect their certificate (new model or
old model, we can’t confirm), we can also confirm the 24/25 certificates are not
ready yet (would end up being new model or old model, we don’t know).
What
is most important for the 23/24 graduates trying to collect their certificate
from the school to know is that the school has decided to not hand out certificates
to third-parties anymore; so you will have to come down with all required
payments and documents to collect your certificate yourself. While this would
have its good, it would also create a problem; graduates who leave the country
before their certificates are ready for collection (considering it often take
the school one to two years to produce certificates), and they may not be
coming to the country again or not after decades, how would they get their
certificates?
I
was thinking the school sending it to them via courier would solve the problem,
but I realised the policy of not wanting to give certificates to third-parties
then becomes redundant—the problem they are trying to solve with the policy
would still be existing and in fact with more exposure now. Then I found a
solution I’d recommend the school takes: electronic version of certificates
should be available for request on a portal like tps.oauife.edu.ng as well, so
graduates can have access to their electronic certificate even when they cannot
come down for the paper one yet. I also then realised people would then rarely
have a reason to come collect their paper certificates. You see the problems
solutions cause? Just find a way to collect your certificate… that’s what I’m
saying.
